The Pool Gang

The opening of the School Swimming Pool in 1962 led to the formation of one of the School’s most valued student service groups called The Pool Gang.

Mr John Maffey was the first master to oversee the group, while E.E. Downes became the inaugural Chief of the Pool Gang, chosen from among the student body. Together, they helped establish a tradition of student responsibility and pride that would continue for decades.

The importance of the Pool Gang was recognised throughout the School community.

The 1964 Tudorian noted:

“We all appreciate the work of the Pool Gang. They spend many hours each week in keeping the pool clean and sparkling for our use.”

In 1965, Mr Stein assumed supervision of the Pool Gang, continuing the strong culture of service established in its early years. Over time, numerous masters and students contributed to maintaining the pool and supporting School life through this important role.

The Pool Gang remained an enduring part of the School community for many years and was mentioned as a formal student role for the final time in the 1991 Tudorian.

Although the role may no longer formally exist, the spirit of contribution, teamwork and quiet service embodied by the Pool Gang remains an important part of the School’s history.
