Scholarships and Bursaries

Jack Egan Awards

Jack Egan spent his early years on the family property near Warren in western New South Wales. He then attended as a boarder first Tudor House from 1950 to 1954 and then The King’s School from 1955 to 1959. He served on the Tudor House Council from 1 January 1998 until his death on 12 July 2007.

Jack Egan became Dux of Tudor House and School Captain of The King’s School. He was also distinguished by his sporting abilities, his love of the Australian bush, and his passion for writing. His love of life, good natured irreverence and natural charm meant he made many long lasting friendships easily. In recognition of “Jackos” fondness of Tudor House, a number of his friends established this Award to perpetuate his memory and to assist other students to derive the same great benefits from Tudor House.

Daryl and Hermina Blaxland Scholarship

Daryl Dudley Blaxland was born on 26 November 1925. He was the great-great-grandson of explorer Gregory Blaxland, one of three European settlers who successfully led the first crossing of the Blue Mountains. Daryl’s family lived in the New South Wales suburb of Broke, and he attended Tudor House as a boarder from 1935 to 1938. His brother Peter was also a Tudorian.

During his time at the School, Daryl participated in Scouts, was a member of the School Choir and competed in the School Shooting Championship in 1938. He attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore) for High School and graduated in 1942. Daryl served in World War II with the RAAF before going on to an esteemed career as a Plantation Manager in PNG and District Manager for BP in the ACT.

Mrs Hermina Blaxland was born in Slovenia and emigrated to Australia in 1949.  Initially, she worked in Young but then moved to Canberra, where she met Daryl Blaxland. The pair were married on 18 September 1953, and they made a life together there for over 60 years.

Mr and Mrs Blaxland did not have children, and Mrs Blaxland left a considerable gift in her estate to the Tudor House Foundation. Alongside the Tudor House Foundation, several other organisations have benefited from the generosity of the Blaxlands, including Shore, the RSPCA (the Blaxlands loved animals), and Canberra Grammar School, where their neighbours’ children attended school.

The Daryl and Hermina Blaxland Scholarship is established using the proceeds from Mrs Blaxland’s bequest to The Tudor House Foundation.
