Active Engaged Learning: keeping boys interested and challenged.
Bill Rose Award 2004
Bill Rose - Highly commended 2009 (Australian College of Educators - Southern Highlands) for innovative Educational Programs
The traditional backbone of Tudor House is to deliver a broad, well-rounded and engaging curriculum for boys. A preparatory school prepares boys for the future by giving them the skills, the knowledge, the experience to be life-long learners. Along with the traditional 3Rs, we focus on developing our boys socially and emotionally. Intelligence is not just academic.
Our unique programme, Active Engaged Learning, synthesises the best educational theories into a boy-friendly focus. We marry enquiry-based models of learning, with theories on accelerated learning, emotional intelligence and habits of mind. We want boys to be engaged, taking responsibility for their learning, so they can discover "hotspots" of interest. We see intelligence as social, emotional and academic.
We want learning to be FUN!
Once a boy has discovered enthusiasm for learning, we use special experiences to springboard into areas that are more challenging. Programmes such as exciting activities (kite flying, billycart derby, boating on the dam, camping and cooking, gardening) bring learning alive, and are unique to our school.
We push our boys to take responsibility for their learning, inside and outside the classroom. We do not want learning to be seen as contained within the classroom. Our boys have to think outside the box.
Our innovative 3Keys programme opens up a world of opportunity, carefully mapping a curriculum that develops character, confidence and wisdom.
Class sizes are kept very small but opportunities immense!
One important facet of Tudor House is our commitment to keeping classes small, while opportunities are large! In the younger years, we keep classes very small. We will not have any class stretch beyond 20 boys. Usually, this number is kept to no more than 16 maximum. We want to personalise our provision - this is a special quality at Tudor House.
Progress is monitored regularly
At Tudor House we have a focus on monitoring progress and individual needs. Every half-term our staff report on each boy's effort. This is referred to as a boy's Plus Scores. Merit certificates and honour cards reward excellent effort across all disciplines.
Positive Praise
Boys like to receive positive praise and recognition for their work and effort. We use many systems to encourage and reward. Our White Card system, is a regular reward scheme, with boys gaining points for their Colour (Red, White or Blue).
