Many schools reduce play, we extend it

Learning Central

Learning Central is the academic heart of our school.  Tudor House's Learning Central is a premium academic program that specializes in primary boys’ education.
Our curriculum is intentionally broad and delivers in three key areas:

  1. Academic, with an emphasis on the essential learning areas of literacy and numeracy
  2. Holistic, with an emphasis on outdoor education, testing oneself with responsible risk-taking, and offering cocurricular opportunities in which all may find some degree of success
  3. Social and emotional, emphasising the importance of community mindfulness, global perspectives and the personal responsibility, and importance, for establishing true Christian values, good habits of mind and positive behaviour.

At Tudor House we believe that:

1. Boys learn best when...

  • they see purpose in their learning
  • the outcomes they are working to achieve are explicit
  • strategies and ways of thinking underpin all lessons
  • they are happy to learn and are engaged
  • concepts of justice and equity govern the learning environment
  • quality feedback is presented regularly
  • good relationships have been formed
  • the environment and learning programme are well-managed and structured
  • behaviour is conducive to learning
  • they see connections between their learning experiences, and relate them to
  • their everyday experience

2. Learning experiences should...

  • be responsive to children’s individual needs
  • be well-planned, well-resourced and well-paced
  • assist them to learn more by being challenging and rewarding
  • follow a structure that allows for cooperative as well as individual work

3. Boys’ learning is enhanced when...

  • good learning habits, attitudes and behaviour are developed
  • there is positive support from home to reiterate or extend work from school
  • the process is considered more important than finishing a task
  • there is positive competition and rewards
  • displays in the learning environment are maximised
  • technology is properly utilised

Quality teachers

Tudor House is a quality school because of our quality people. Our teachers are exceptional, with many studying for higher degrees in educational fields.

Spotlight Lessons - a focus on quality teaching

We have developed our own unique model of learning, resulting in our Spotlight Lesson templates: lessons in which teachers carefully plan, observe and reflect professionally, publishing their lesson templates in your son’s Learning Portfolios, which accompany academic reports.  We are committed to developing and delivering quality lessons that engage and challenge learners.

The Timetable

We have protected times for key learning.  Our timetable is specifically designed to focus on the essential learning areas of literacy and numeracy in the mornings, while boys’ brains are fresh.  There are two blocks of protected times – English and Maths.  During these blocks we incorporate direct instruction programs for twenty minutes in Spelling and Mental Arithmetic.

The academic precinct

We focus on well-resourced, modern environments for classroom learning. This precinct consists of modern classrooms and specialist learning zones. Our classrooms offer state-of-the-art learning resources with all classrooms renovated and fully equipped with interactive whiteboards, audio/DVD systems, computer workstations, withdrawal area, wet area, carefully designed display spaces, air-conditioning (Years 3-6), new carpet, desks and seats.

New Library

A major building focus has been undertaken.  Our new library is at the centre of our school.  This building offers a Gifted and Talented Scholars' Class, new staff common room, new bathrooms, a lecture theatre with video-conferencing technology and data displays, three interactive whiteboards, over 30 computers, air-conditioning, break-out quiet areas, communal learning spaces and innovative reading gardens - with scented plants to help retention.  Tudor has undergone significant investment in designs and construction that focus on learning for boys.

Centre of excellence for technology

We also have a 10mb connection and all our staff are equipped with Smart technology and docking stations - making the use of technology easy and reliable.  Our desire is to have computers for learning but not for leisure.

Preserving social interaction

Tudor wants to preserve inter-personal skills and exploration of the outdoors.  At a time when more and more children are plugging in and connecting via the computer, we hold true to the belief we want our boys to socialise face-to-face not by the interface of a screen.
